Cell phones do not affect Communication systems on Airplanes.

Airplanes are specially insulated against foreign radio signals, and their communication and navigation instruments operate on different frequencies from cell phones. The Federal Communications Commission (USA) is actually the agency responsible for the ban, since the signals could potentially block telecommunication systems on the ground.

If someone makes a phone call from a plane, the signal would bounce across multiple cell towers at once, which could prevent other calls from going through. Yet some airlines in Europe, the Middle East and Asia have started allowing cell phone usage on flights.

Chocolate kills dogs!!

You may have heard people say that chocolate will kill dogs? Does that make sense? If I can eat chocolate, why can't my dog?
Dogs and people are different in lots of ways. For example, dogs can run around in the snow all day in their bare feet and it doesn't cause them any problems. People can run around barefooted in the snow for 30 seconds or so before it hurts. There are lots of differences like that between dogs and people.

It turns out that, for dogs, a chemical in chocolate called theobromine is the source of the problem. Theobromine is similar to caffeine. Theobromine is toxic to a dog when it ingests between 100 and 150 milligrams per kilogram of body weight.

Different types of chocolate contain different amounts of theobromine: It would take 20 ounces of milk chocolate to kill a 20-pound dog, but only 2 ounces of baker's chocolate or 6 ounces of semisweet chocolate.

Did you know?

You can recover data from a failing hard drive by putting it in the freezer for a few hours and then reinstalling it in the computer.

While this method won't magically fix whatever is wrong with your computer, it can get your hard drive working long enough for you to recover important data before it gives up the ghost for good. This generally works best when the drive is making a tell-tale clicking sound caused by overheated metal parts that have expanded. Freezing the hard drive cools and shrinks the metal so the drive will mount properly and run long enough (hopefully) for you to copy your files to another source. :D

You Cannot Tickle Yourself...

You cannot tickle yourself. The cerebellum, warns the rest of the brain that you are about to tickle yourself. Since your brain already knows this, it ignores the resulting sensation, hence you can’t tickle yourself.

DOES THE COLOR RED REALLY MAKE BULLS ANGRY?

LOL... NO!! Spanish matadors began using a small red cape, or muleta, in bullfighting around the 1700s. Ever since, it seems, people have perpetuated the color-charged myth that red makes bulls go wild.

bulls see red

The color red isn't what causes bulls to attack. In fact, bulls don't seem to have any color
preference at all. They charge at whichever object is moving the most!

Fat Flu

There’s been a lot of research findings about obesity , but this seems to be the weirdest yet. As reported in the August 2005 ASM News (from the American Society of Microbiology) and the January 2005 International Journal of Obesity, some think that you can get fat by catching the fat flu.
Well, not flu exactly, but a human adenovirus called Ad-36. Most adenoviruses cause cold-like symptoms, but this one seems to also trigger weight gain. Richard Atkinson (president of the American Obesity Association) and others at the University of Wisconson tested obese and non-obese individuals for antibodies against Ad-36. Antibodies serve as evidence of current or past exposure to the virus.

Among the heavier group, roughly one-third had been exposed to the virus, whereas only one-tenth of the skinny folk had. Those who had the antibodies were an average of 50 pounds heavier than those that did not. Coincidence? Three related viruses were found not to differ, on average, between the husky and not.
According to Atkinson , Ad-36 changes fat metabolism so that humans and other animals pack on more pounds while eating the same amount of food. This gain appears to be slow and steady, so if one gets the heads up, he or she could ward off the weight by lifestyle changes. Still, doesn’t seem fair, does it!

Iter Avto - The world's first automobile navigation system

Behold the Iter Avto, the world's first automobile navigator, created in 1930.

Of course, it didn't have voice prompts and GPS, but we all need to start somewhere.

The principle is quite simple. The screen manually scrolls paper maps that are attached to a cable thats similar to a modern mechanical speedometer. Thus, the scroll rate of the map is proportional to vehicle's speed.

Ten years earlier, way back in 1920, you could find the Plus Fours Routefinder. This manual "navigator" resembled a clock and consisted of paper maps and two wooden handles that needed to be scrolled manually.

The Smiley Face

His design of the Smiley came about in 1963. The State Mutual Life Assurance Company of Worcester, Massachusetts purchased Guarantee Mutual Company of Ohio. The merger resulted in low employee morale. In an attempt to solve this, Ball was employed in 1963 as a freelance artist to create a smiley face to be used on buttons, desk cards, and posters.

The use of the smiley face was part of the company's friendship campaign whereby State Mutual handed out 100 smiley pins to employees. The aim was to get employees to smile while using the phone and doing other tasks. . More than 50 million smiley face buttons were sold by 1971, and the smiley has been described as an international icon.

Fact of the Day (13/6/11)

Apple seeds do contain a small amount of cyanide, which is a lethal poison, but you are protected from the toxin by the hard seed coating. If you eat whole apple seeds, they pass through your digestive system relatively untouched. If you chew the seeds thoroughly, you will be exposed to the chemicals inside the seeds, but the dose of toxins in an apple is small enough that your body can easily detoxify it.

Apple seeds contain amygdalin, which decomposes into toxic benzaldehyde and prussic acid (hydrogen cyanide. However, humans are able to detoxify small amounts of these chemicals.

Fact of the Day (11/6/11)

Sergey Brin and Larry Page didn’t know too much about HTML. That’s why the first homepage had a very bare bones design. The simple design caused people to just sit there looking at the screen during initial tests. Test users were actually waiting for the “rest of the page to load”. To solve that particular problem the Google Copyright message was added as a line as an end of page marker.
